Net Fishing

What do you guys think net fishing is? Yup you guessed it right this fishing required massive nets with many people work as one team. Back in the older days communities used to gather to feed the villages around Guam. The Net was about 20 feet long and 8 feet in width with weights on the bottom. The technique of this was to trap schools of fish when they were feeding. But this was also a process that took hours of preparation, before feeding the net would be set and during feeding local gather to close in the fish to a smaller bay.

After catching hundreds of pounds of fish the only way to go is sharing with everyone that put in work and for their families. After trapping the fish many locals would sit back and teach the younger generations how this fishing was done. This was also cultural and traditional based the local word is called Talaya. Have you ever done any fishing like this ?

Rod and Reel

This fishing is what is usually know to most people, but there are so many different types especially in the states. They have such things as fly fishing or they could be using different types of bait. But in Guam it is most commonly done on the beach. Many of the locals go to different beaches all along the coasts because there is different techniques used. This can also be done from the reef, when it is low tide you can walk out onto the reef and cast from there. The most common bait used for this is a shiny metal bait caster.

Although this is the sort of beginning way to get into fishing you still learn a lot of key skills. You learn everything about how to cast and from how your bait matters with the types of fish you are trying to catch. That is trying different things is good because you see what works. In Guam this type of fishing more common amongst older locals.

Spear Fishing

I guarantee this fishing will surprise most of you! Today we will be talking about spear fishing, this type of fishing is very unique and some what of a tradition thing. It is very simple way but complex swell because you must be precise and skilled. Many people in the older days used to just sharpen sticks and throw them at fish from the beach, but we have adapted since then. The Islander cultures will know what I am talking about, but this fishing is done from the beach and people dive inside and outside the reef to catch fish all with a spear and accuracy.

But also know that fish can swim at different depths fast because they are in their own environment. Holding your breathe and shooting a fish in the ocean is a skill only some people posses. Starting from the beach is important though because you begin to learn how the fish swim and act in certain situations, you also learn the oceans timing. Mother Nature is nothing to mess around with.

Deep Sea Trolling

What's up everybody! Today I will be talking about Deep sea trolling, this type of fishing requires the years of experience. But it also is not your typical throw a line in and wait, with trolling you are going 10-20 knots while dragging 5-8 lines 300 feet behind the boat. There are a lot of moving parts in trolling because you need the Captain to put you on the spot and find the fish. But the deckhand is very important swell because they must work together in everything they do. Landing big fish requires skill there is also no guarantees you catch a fish.

Now when you begin to set your lines out into the water, the bait can alive or it may be a plastic squid looking bait. Back on the Island of Guam we use the plastic squid with big metal heads and hooks. They are designed to look as if they are squid in a big school chasing the boat, then big fish become interested and attracted to the squid. Depending on the season will determine the fish that you catch, and it can be anything from Blue Marlin to barracuda.
